I suspect it has a lot to do with our cultural expectations. We all expect men to be violent nutjobs, so there's no real surprise when a guy tears out a dude's spine.

However we're told that women are all delicate, precious flowers, so when you see a movie where a woman straight-up tears out a dude's spine, then that's crazy and scary, because women aren't meant to tear dude's spines out.

So, as usual my answer is PATRIARCHY, with a side of GENDER DISCRIMINATION.

I promise I'll be more original next time...

You might have a point, actually. That would explain why Japan, as a far more patriarchal society, has such a preponderance of female ghosts.

I swear, Japanese culture only has male ghosts if they're like, hanging out with female ghosts in some sort of love pact or something.

We haven't updated it in a while. I really need to get around to reading Midnight Sun, but it's not available on audiobook and I really don't have the dedication to actually sit down and read it.
